The craft behind high-quality human data.
Clear scope, calibrated experts, and a review process that preserves context.
Clarity is a quality control
Ambiguous instructions produce inconsistent examples. Define the intended behavior, the permitted sources, the treatment of uncertainty, and the attributes reviewers should evaluate. Pilot a small batch before increasing volume, then use the pilot to refine the brief.
Calibration is an ongoing practice
Expertise helps, but shared standards are still necessary. Review common examples together, document edge cases, and retain a route for contributors to ask questions. Track guideline versions so that a dataset can be interpreted in the context of the instructions used to create it.
Preserve a traceable handoff
A useful handoff includes more than a file of outputs. Record the schema, review criteria, accepted limitations, and the checks applied to the delivery. Treat access, retention, and sensitive data requirements as part of the project scope rather than an afterthought.
